Go to community college then a public university.
Since you are supporting yourself you may be more inclined toward a technical/trade school type route --> go get an apprenticeship with a plumber, electrician, etc.
I think you are right that diesel mechanic is probably not a bad career choice. In the book, "the millionaire next door" the author writes about the suprising number of current and future millionaires who are "bllue-collar entrepeneurs" -- people who own their own plumbing, heating, landscaping, subcontracting, etc, business.
If you love being a mechanic, then do that. Live at your parents to save money while you can. Get as much education/credentials/experience as you can.
Contrary to everything above, unless you are not academcially inclined you should really consider going to college (study science, math, computer science, or engineering). Go to the best-cheapest college you can. Do your first two years at community college, so you can mature and then work hard at and appreciate a four-year university.
Lots of not-smart people do very well in college. In college and in success generally: self-discipline >>> intelligence.
