How should I go about becoming an electrician?
Asked by Taylor H
I am 16 years old, in gr. 11. I have known for a while now I would like to become one. The councilor at my school said I have 2 options, going to college, taking a 3 year electrical engineering technologist program or a 12 week electrician program. She recommended I take the 3 year program but I am not really sure. What would you recommend? What classes should I take in gr. 12 for a good chance to get in? Thanks.

There are different types. Inside Wireman suggests lots of math, mechanical drawing. College is always better than training, if you have the money. good luck..

You have a couple of options. IEC(Independent Electrical Contractors) or join the IBEW. They are both Department of Labor certified apprenticeships. I graduated the IEC in 2000. I really did not focus in high school like I should have and dropped out of community college. This left me very little options. Thank god for the IEC. All tution is taken off the top of your check and your employer pays for just about everything else. Competitive wages, insurance for you and your family, and a sense of pride. I currently work in Iraq making 10,000 a month. Check it out! If you have any questions let me know.......good luck
