What do I need to do to switch careers from Civil Engineering to become an accountant?
Asked by penfan4ever
I am currently working as a highway designer and I was looking into possibly switching careers. I am thinking of going into accounting. I am not entirely sure what I want to do, but how hard would it be to become an accountant? Should I take the CPA exam? Do I go through a MBA program? I'm a little confused about all of this and just wondering what I would need to do. Thanks!

Back to grad school for an MBA and CPA. Unfortunately, accounting is more subject to outsourcing to cheap foreign labor than engineering is. Also, money is supposed to to pouring into infracture repair & replacement, which might mean better job opportunities upcoming for qualified and experienced engineers. Unless you totally despise your job and want desperately to be a CPA because you love doing it so much, you are probably better off where you are than where you think you might want to go.
