What should I wear for a secretarial position interview?
Asked by Carina
I think a suit may be too much, especially since this is a part-time position. It is in a court house which is typically a formal environment, but I know the one here is pretty relaxed in terms of clothing. How about black pants, and what on top? I have a v neck green shirt, and plan to wear a white crew neck shirt underneath.
I don't have a pants suit. I have a dress suit. Would that be the next best thing?

For the interview I would recommend wearing a pants suit. You stated it is in a somewhat formal setting. Better to be a little overdressed for the interview and after hire you can dress down a bit.

Dress to impress... Always. It's better to be over dressed than under dressed and a good manager will take into account your dressing attire. Looking very professional will give you that added boost. The rest is up to you. Dressing down will only hurt you. If you really want the job dress to kill but keep it on the conservative side.

It doesn't matter what the daily wardrobe is, you should always dress for success. You need to wear the suit with a white blouse. Pull your hair up and wear a minimal amount of make-up. Go very easy on the jewelry too. Only post earrings, a simple necklace such as a cross or a heart and only one or two simple rings. Also don't wear colored hose. Only tan or nude stocking colors and don't wear fancy "club" high heels. If you don't own a pair or "power" shoes then wear flats or loafers. Also, carry a black purse or portfolio (cloth covered binder). The more professional you look the better your chances of getting the job. If you don't wear a suit you may be the only one interviewing for the position who didn't which will automatically put you out of the running. If you wear a suit and someone else doesn't then they will be out of the running. It's a tough job market out there and not wearing the suit could be what keeps you from getting the job. It will empress your potential employer!
