I would like to know how I get certified as a nursing assistant in the state of NJ?
Asked by anniedhm
My daughter is 22 and a nursing student but one of the prerequisites is that she become either a certified nursing assistant, a patient care tech or a home health aid. How does one accomplish this without taking a $2000 course at the college she is attending? I was thinking she could train as cna or a pct or a home health aid and then take the certification test through the state? Is this possible? has anyone done this and if so, how do we go about doing this? thanks so much in advance... Annie I am thinking that she would be better off doing the CNA, PCT or CHHA in a facility where she could train on the job and then take the test to get certified through the state,,, does anyone know of a place that is hiring in central NJ,,, howell, Jackson, Lakwood, freehold, toms river area... that train you?

CNA (certified Nursing Assistant) and CHHA (Certified Home Health Aide) are 2 different certifications. It may be worth getting hold of Bayada Nursing, or Visiting Nurse Assoc. (I think Visiting Nurse has different names in different areas of NJ). They may offer a course without agreeing to work for them. Most Hospices or Senior Housing offer classes to become certified, but you have to agree to work for them for a certain amount of time. I know that CNA's need to have a background check and fingerprinting, not sure about CHHA, but I think so. And you also need to have a Mantou Test (TB) for both. I don't know where you are in NJ, so I will just warn you about a school in northern NJ named Ace Healthcare Training Institute. They are in Dover NJ and Union NJ. Unfortunately I went there and they are completely worthless!! The quality of their education is terrible. And I only passed the state test because I read the $60.00 book they supplied, but I paid for thoroughly, and that is the only reason I passed the test. It was not their teaching ability. I wish I could recommend somewhere other than Bayada or Visiting Nurse, but that may be a start. And you may want to check with different hospices, nursing homes or senior facilities, or even local hospitals they may offer classes or know of somewhere your daughter can go for a reasonabe amount of money without having to work for them. I know nursing school is tough, and requires a great deal of time and study and it would be even harder if she had to work and go to school at the same time. I hope that is not her only alternative, and she can get the certification so she can continue her nursing education and career.

I am taking online courses at Ashworth college. The courses well of course run differ prices but I am taking 3 different nursing courses and all is under $900. I am doing Medical and Dental assistant, medical transcription, Medical claims and billing. The courses are like $994 but there a $100 off right now and I got $700 off of all 3 courses since I took all 3 and some courses are the same. so your daughter should be able to do some online courses and save some money..good luck
