A lot more people are competing for clerical and administrative positions, as they're seen as an entry point into a company. You have to make your resume stand out. Put more emphasis on your skills and accomplishments at past jobs, rather than just listing what your tasks were. Make it clear that you know how to solve problems, how to deliver top-notch service, whatever skills you may have that make you the most valuable employee. Write a customized cover letter to go with each resume that explains how your skills relate to the specific tasks or qualifications mentioned in the job ad. Good luck!

Tell me about! I am applying for admin assistant, admin roles and I have a degree but you are lucky as you have the experience so you stand a much better chance. Its still so hard though with this recession.

Yes. Learn to spell and write professionally. Administrative Assistant positions require substantial computer knowledge, usually in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Access. Visit free online tutorials to familiarize yourself if you do not know these programs.

It is difficult with this economy right now. I'm also looking for an office position and it's not easy...
I would suggest applying to a temp agency. You can google them and find ones in your area, they'll know of a number of places looking to hire with your qualifications and most likely find one that fits really well for you and the company. The site I posted is one I found that has many locations throughout the US.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
