Do people who cook for a living in the UK find it offensive to be called a cook, do they prefer chef?
Asked by Oot n Aboot
I have heard this, wasn't sure. Don't want to offend. Here in Canada it is fine to call someone a cook.

Chefs are qualified. They have passed exams and are entitled to the title of Chef. Cooks are not qualified, anyone can be a cook. My husband has been in the catering Industry for 45 years with many qualifications, and is upset if anyone calls him a cook.

In finer dining establishments, I'd go toward Chef, but if it's a chain restaurant or something, or a pub, then cook would be fine.

As a chef for 30 years -basically chefs usually (I dont) have a big ego and they like people around the kitchen to say yes chef no chef three bags full chef-it makes them feel important. But practically in a very busy kitchen with lots of people you need to know whos in charge and giving the orders -so sometimes its very nessisary. So in a busy hotel yes you would call them chef -in a cafe you would call them cooks generally
