Can someone still work as an electrician if they're colorblind?
Asked by Final H
I remember someone saying he couldn't work as an electrician because he couldn't tell the difference between blue and green wires. Is it true that if someone can't distinguish between blue and green, they can't really work as an electrician?

There are many shades of color and not all color blind people are color blind to them all.
If a person cannot differentiate colors, such as green, red, blue, gray, white, etc., then it may be true the wiring colors may not be detectable. That person should find another job. However if a person has a little color blindness but can distinguish wire colors, it shouldn't be a problem.

there are many different color wires dealing with electricity...so I would doubt anyone who is color blind would have a very long career

There are electricians working who have colour blindness, here is one set of rules for the Australian situtation:

We need alot more electricians so it may be a sympathetic environment where you can do something to deal with the challenge. If you are determined there must be ways to deal with it, or maybe yu can specialise in certain services. Not all wires are coloured after all, my electrician had to get me to pull different ones so he could see at the other end which ones moved then he knew what to do.

It wouldn't be in there best interest. There are many different shades of each color. If they really want they could. That's like a deaf mechanic.
