Considering that you have a good paying steady municipal job in this economic environment is a testament to your ambition. Going into the military with a high school degree and no trade skills yet would mean they probably would give you a low level assignment, like the infantry. With the economy this bad, I would ask a lot of questions before I joined up; yes they pay for school but is it worth the risk? Parttime where, at the MTA,? if so that would be my first choice. Otherwise, I would stick it out at the MTA and go to school part time first. You never know at age 18, maybe you need some time to make up your mind about a career. Going parttime first lets you feel it out without the risk of unemployment. Look at the news, I will bet that if the national unemployment number is 8% for all people, it is over 20% for teenagers, maybe well over that by the time this is all over. I think you are in the car bird seat.

Will your parents be able to cover you on their insurance when you go to school? That is one thing to think about. Also, will your current employers help you go to school? Think about it long and hard. You could always take a couple of classes and see if you are going to like it and if you do, then you quit your job. Job with benefits are so hard to come by right now. The military is good too, but make sure your family is in agreement. Good luck, you seem to be looking at it from all the angles.

GO TO SCHOOL. don't worry about doing it fast, just worry about doing right. take your time and focus on doing good work. you're lucky you only need 60 creds, i need 90 to graduate my college. but definitely go, it's an experience that you won't get anywhere else and you won't regret it. just don't rush yourself. you're 18-- you have all the time in the world. just make sure that you're happy, focused, and motivated and everything will work out.

You can go to community college as a full time student and finish in two years. (15 units each semester and pass all your classes). Go into the police academy when you are 21. Go to school as a part time student while still keeping your job if possible. It will take you longer to complete the 60 units though. You will have to talk to whoever your supervisor is and ask if you can still be able to keep your job while you go to school. Juggling school with work can be stressful at times, but you have to have good time management skills and always be persistent with your school assignments and duties at your work (if you choose to work). Whatever your choice is, I hope you decide to go to school. It will really change the opportunities that you will have. Good luck.
