Is Pipe Fitting/ Welding a good career decision?
Asked by JAVON
Im thinking about taking a pipe fitting course at my local community college. With the economy being the way it is, would pipe fitting be a good field to get into? Note: I'm 21, and I live in Louisiana (In case it makes a difference).

My dad was a pipefitter in Chicago for 46 years. He made a good living - we weren't rich but we lived very comfortably. He was always very proud of the buildings he worked on. The union always kept him working, or paid during the few economic downturns during those years.
Once you've been an apprentice, then a journeyman (or vice-verse) you would have the skills to go anywhere to make your living, which is a real plus. When you get to an age where you don't want to be out in the field, there are other opportunities in the profession.
I always admired my dad for how hard he worked. He got up at 4am every day for all those years to catch the train downtown but he was always home for dinner with the family.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
