What should be the legal age to consent to sex?
Asked by Tiffany
What age do you believe should be considered the legal age of sexual consent? To have even consensual sex with someone under age 16 can have serious consequences even when they lie about their ages. What should be the true age of consent? At what age can you decide to have sex with full understanding of all possible consequences....to the point where your partner should bear no responsibility for the act? Should the age be different for males and females?

Personally I think it should be 18. Since that is the age the government has declared that someone is mature enough to make a decision and be held to it, then why should sex be any different?

I think the age of understanding of sex for females is 20. And for males it should be 25.

In the UK it is 16, which seems about right to me. Children do become sexually active younger than that, but very few prosecutions result.

It is 16 here (UK) and this age is regarded here as sensible. It applies to both sexes. Even if someone younger than this did understand the consequences, that does not mean they should be exposed to that risk, or be permitted to expose themselves to it.

Does it matter? They all have sex earlier than allowed anyway...
If you say it's 18, they'll have sex before that...
If you say it's 14, they'll have sex before that...
And the pedos that do have sex with pre-teens are getting away with it repeatedly anyway, so what's the point?

No the age should not be any different because of gender. I believe 17 is a good age to be able to consent. Hopefully it will make people think. Is this person close to 18 or do they look to young to be 16. Therefore if they do look to young you know your wrong. The best way to be sure is take your time and meet the family and ask about birthdays and who is the oldest in the family and who is the baby and say and how old would that make whatever the persons name is.

I think people should be at least 20. At 18, teens feel like they know so much. Girls fall in love at the drop of a hat, and emotions are too strong. I had a baby at 23. I will tell you it was hard for me, and me and the father split up before she was a year old. It was tramatic. I now am 29, and have been happily married for 3 years. We had a baby 10 months ago, and it's been smooth sailing. I wish I would've waited. (I had my first at 14 - I didn't know what I was doing, and I thought I was so... in love. What a joke.) We need to protect our children from making huge mistakes.

I really think you should be married, but if not, then 18.
Kids should not be having sex in high school, they should be playing sports, hanging out with their friends, being a kid, and learning.
