Career Questions and Answers
I need some career advice!!!?
Asked by sweetea85
First order of business: From 2006-2008 I worked as a bank teller. The job wasn't a good fit for me. I got nervous processing large transactions and being in charge of excessive amounts of cash (usually over $20,000). The customer service aspect of the job was a breese and pretty much came naturally to me. They said that my people skills were the reason that they kept me around for so long. Well I ended up getting fired from that position due to some of the mistakes I made in the area of cash handling. Now, I'm looking for another job and I've got a prospect in mind. I'm pretty sure they're going to interview me and ask me why I left my other job. I'm just trying to find a way to say that where I don't sound like a complete loser. Also, I'd like you to take a look at my resume and see if there's anything I could do to improve my chances of getting a good job in this economy. Thanks.

First, tell them you left bcz it was not a good fit for you. You can mentioned something along the lines of dealing with huge amounts of cash made you uneasy - or even the prospect of getting robbed. Whatever, just keep it brief.
The resume:
E-mail Sweetea85@Yahoo.com ----- if this is your address, change it to something a bit more professional - something like your initials or an abbreviation of your last name work well and make sense to the person looking at the resume.
Objective: Focus this to the company you are applying for. If the position is a customer service one, state that you are seeking a customer service role with a solid company...again, simple and basic but let them know that this is the position you are applying for.
Education
remove the high school info - if you went to college it's assumed and you can enter it on the application.
2003 - 2006 *My College *City, PA
Theology Diploma/Christian Education Certificate
Class Secretary
Salutatorian
Student Cafe Assistant Manager
Work Experience
September 2001 - August 2003 *Fast Food Place *City, IN
Cashier/Food Preparation
Work on this for all of your experiences. Format it like this:
Delivered terrific customer service by assisting customers with orders (dine in, phone in, and drive thru)
Versatile in all areas of Fast Food Place from cashier to order to food prep and beyond.
Won multiple suggestive-selling contests for creative selling ideas like ____________and list one.
August 2006 - November 2008 Bank *City, IN
Teller/Customer Service
Delivered great custoemr service by processing large cash transactions, opening new accounts, and answering phones
Filed confidential paperwork
Maintained an inventory of supplies and processed supply orders as
needed
If you have volunteer jobs, list them as well to add some oomph to the resume.
Hope that helps

1st of all you did not mention what type of mistake you made in handling cash. was it cash shortage, mishandking of cash, was it serious? then you should not apply for a job that handles money.
2nd, you did not specify in your resume what position you are trying to apply. your resume states "to secure a position" what position?. you yourself is unsure of yourself.
3rd, i would advice that you apply for a job wherein you can maximize the use of your people skills in customer service or sales perhaps.
