What kind of job can I get with a BA in social work if I have been to prison before?
Asked by Claire W
My mom is graduating this may with a BA in social work. She did well in college college, she got a good GPA and participated in clubs and stuff but she served a couple of years in prison. Where can she do some kind of social work? If she can't be a social worker, do you have any ideas for a good place to work?
BTW: she lives in California

She might try to explore doing some social work in a prison or jail. I know this may be the LAST place in the world in which she would want to be employed, but she could possibly be a counseler to young women in the correctional system, and would probably be the best choice considering she did time herself. A lot of incarcerated people usually don't want to hear advice from a person who has never been in their shoes, so your mom could probably steer them into the right direction.

Depends on if it was a felony or misdemeanor. It also depends on what she wants to do with her life? Use her experience behind bars to encourage others? Try to open her own business? Think and act appropriately. Peace and Good Luck!!

It will be hard for any ex con to get a good job. It might depend what she was convicted of. If she was doing drugs she might be able to work in a drug rehab.
