On the national news they said that auto mechanic was a good job to have now, because of the economic crunch people don't want to buy new cars so they have to fix up the one that they have. "The average salary for auto mechanic jobs is $36,000. Average auto mechanic salaries can vary greatly due to company, location, industry, experience and benefits." See the link below for more info.

Income in the auto mech industry is mostly based on experience level and what certifications you have. The more experience, the more certifications, the higher the pay. As for demand, as long as people have cars, there will be need for mechanics. Especially now that most cars are computerized. Unless it's a car that was manufactured pre-1990, long gone are the days of going to someplace that has spare parts and fixing everything yourself.

go to salary.com. enter job and zip code. it will give you average salary for job in that zip code area. At this point in time, with economy down people are keeping autos longer. Demand is about average though as dealerships are suffering.
