How to get into help desk job in Boston area?
Asked by firestar.1981@ymail.com
It's extremely hard to get a job in help desk/ desktop support. My ultimate goal is to become a network administrator. I have A+, degree in MIS, and plan to take Network + soon. No experience. Can you guys give me advice? How did you get started? What was the market like when you started? I know people who don't even have degree or certification, but I guess got in a good time and got a great job. I'm smarter than them, but no luck. I need support.

I am not sure if you mean you have your A+ Certification or you received an A grade average with a B.S. in M.I.S., either way knowledge is good but more often an employer wants someone with hands on experience. One word of advice, just because you have a certification or degree doesn't make you smarter than anyone; however, even if you are having an entitlement attitude that you should be hired because of your degree isn't going to get you any where.
I would recommend you start networking and talking to your career services center from where ever you received your degree. Ask them about employers that prefer to hire students with degree or certification. Network with former classmates and find out where they are working to see if they can refer you. Talk to your former instructors; most likely they know people in the industry. Join professional networking sites like Linked In and start building a network.
You should also interview with some contract employment agencies. Companies like Tek Systems, Adecco, Randstad have clients that want to hire a pc tech, desktop support, or help desk person on a contract or temporary basis.
Good Luck.
