what do you do during training for cashier?
Asked by Ry
I am going to start training for a cashier position at Kmart. I would like to know what goes on, what do you do, when do you go on your own? Anybody who has worked there please help. This is my first job. No negative answers please!

You will be observed/shadowed for one to three days, depending on how fast you learn their system. Then you will be on your own. If this is a super Kmart, you will learn to deal with multiple forms of currency and how to type them into the register. They are Vision cards, WIC checks, checks, Credit cards, Debit Cards, Cash, and some places have company charges where people can form a charge tab with Kmart. The company charge though has been phasing out.
The bulk of your training will come from learning the register, the rest will come from learning costumer service: greeting with a smile, making small talk, asking if they found everything, and then asking them to have a good night and come again.
You might also have to learn to sack stuff but that won't take more than an hour. Here's the bulk, don't mix food with chemicals and don't put heavy stuff on fragile or squashable items. Your done.
Been a cashier for five years. Worked grocery to retail sales.

Some places make you watch a series of videos to train so that you can have hands on interaction with a computer/cash register at the same time. Some places make you shadow another cashier to see how the job is done. Don't worry they'll teach you something before they throw you on your own.
