What is it like being a Construction Worker?
Asked by Joshua W
Im fresh out of high school with no job experience aside from my serving in the National Guard for the last 15 months and being a dish washer once upon a time. Ive just been hired by S.B. Ballard construction company as a general laborer, and Im just wondering whats its like, what to expect, things to bring etc etc. This is my first full time job so I NEED this job, badly to say the least. Anyway, I start monday and im just looking for advice and what ever you got for me. Thnx. Josh

Yeah, I'd have to agree with James H here. Its not going to be fun. If its anything like the construction I've worked, you can expect it'll be like eight to twelve hours of toting eighty pound bags of concrete around. Hard. As far as what to bring, well your probably not required to bring anything, but here are a few things you might consider. Sunscreen (I'm only 18 myself but I still wear sunscreen, due to my experience from working with my dad in construction since I could remember.) Lunch Wear lightly colored clothes Wear an undershirt Please don't show up in shorts Boots Your own water (gallon jug maybe) And most importantly: A Good Attitude. Seriously. It'll make you stand out. And you'll tend to enjoy work better than your coworkers. What ever you do, honestly consider college.

It takes a tole on your body, my dad was a construction worker before he became a contractor and has some back problems but nothing too serious.
