What type of education do you need to be a labor and delivery RN in WI?

I am thinking of being a labor and delivery RN but I am not sure what type of schooling I need. I have only a high school diploma.

ob/gyn nurse is just a specialty. any well trained nurse can work in maternity. but of course they probably would prefer someone with experience. finding the facility to give you that opportunity is another thing

You can be an RN with as little as an Associate's Degree in Nursing. You could also get a BSN, which gives you a more thorough knowledge of professional nursing. Nursing programs teach you to care for all kinds of populations of patients, and you will have observations of L&D and will have clinical rotations taking care of postpartum mothers and newborns. But your real training comes on the job. It's very difficult (but I won't say impossible) to get a job in L&D as a new graduate RN. You might need to spend some time working in a regular hospital medical / surgical unit to get that experience doing regular patient care before you can move on and get hired in L&D. Also, L&D jobs often say they prefer BSN grads over ADN grads, so you're better off in the long run if you hold the higher degree, the BSN.
