What are good entry level jobs for an Accounting Major?
Asked by Jotun
I recently changed my major to accounting after taking an accounting class. I really enjoyed the class and I would like to get my foot in the door somewhere so I can hit the ground running when I graduate. I have seen some jobs like an accounting clerk that might be good but I was wondering if there are some others.

Best Answer:
Get a job in a CPA firm as a bookkeeper, staff accountant or even receptionist. Then you are likely to be promoted after you pass the CPA exam and may even have enough experience to get licensed.

A:
Apply to all the Graduate Programs you can find. These are different from Graduate Jobs, which are just a job. A program will last typically 12-18months and involve classroom style training and usually job rotations around the different departments. Typically only large firms and the government offer Graduate Programs. These Programs are better than the jobs as they pay you to further advance your career and the companies running these usually have extensive support for CPA or CA programs. You will be able to further your career better with a program and improve you employability (esp in economic times like we are experiencing at the moment) *edit: If you are looking to improve your employability while still studying, any job in involving receptionist work, bookkeeper, or any other office jobs will greatly improve your standing as a graduate. Office jobs tend to be more valuable than retail / laboring jobs because they will make your transition to work easier as you are familiar with the environment.

Best entry level job for recent college grads is going to the BIG 4 (KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, and Ernst & Young). Starting here will open doors in the future, you'll have a nationwide client network with Fortune 500 companies, you'll be motivated to study and pass the CPA exam (they offer great incentives to pass), and you have access to their many perks. You can start early by applying for their handsomely paid internships before you graduate. To apply for their full-time positions, prepare your application at least 1 year before your graduation since they pre-hire students. Other choices for entry-level accountants include: joining a CPA firm at the local, regional, or national level, joining a private company (either a Fortune 500 or local company), or you can work in preparing taxes, bookkeeping, property management, or payroll (all does not require a CPA). CPA is a certified public accountant. Having this will allow you to advance in your career in so many ways, even outside the accounting industry (ie. banking). You are welcome to check my blog for more information on accounting and BIG 4 opportunities.
