You can obtain your RN license after graduating from an Associate's Degree in Nursing program which is usually offered at community colleges. It is a two year program of sequenced courses. However most students must complete pre-requisite courses in biology, chemistry, and anatomy & physiology (perhaps a few others) prior to even being able to apply to a nursing program, so for the average student it would take about 3 years in all.
You can also get a Bachelor's of Science or Arts in Nursing (BSN or BAN), which is a 4 year degree. You take those pre-reqs during your freshman and sophomore years along with your general ed. courses, apply to the college's nursing program during sophomore year and start the nursing core during junior year. This degree gives you more professional knowledge, public health components, nursing research, leadership / management training, etc., and in the long run this degree will help you advance into higher positions. You can always do the ADN program first and complete the BSN later on, and most employers of RNs these days will offer some kind of tuition assistance to pay for it as part of their benefits package.

Usually 4 years. My got her RN at community college but she has a Masters in business so maybe that's why it only took her 2 years.
Good luck.

A:
2 years or 4 years. If you get an associate degree it is 2 year degree. If you get a bachelors (BSN) it takes 4 years.
If you want to later get a Masters degree or have more authority then get a BSN. If you just want to work as a nurse and later consider more education get an ASN. You can save money by going to a 2 year program and then transfering into a BSN program and only have to do 2 more years. And you would have 2 degrees! An ASN and BSN.

for an ASN/ADN-RN, its about 2-3 years in community college. for a BSN-Rn, its about 4-5 years in college.
you need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam to be a real RN, the ASN or BSN degrees just help you with it.
