One of the best sources of information in the qulaity filed is the American Society for Quality (ASQ) - 800-248-1946. To start with - they have professional certifications that are considered the best in the world. So for the manager - look over the ASQ Certified Manager of Quality and Operational Excellence (sometimes just called the certified quality manager). The Body of Knowlege (BOK) give a very good explanation of what a quality manager should be ready to do or know as it relates to any industry. Then, since you mentioned the construction industry. When contacting the ASQ, ask about the Design & Construction Division (note: the ASQ has two basic membership units - local groups called Sections/Chapters and national groups called Divisions). Your friend can call ASQ and get contact information about the Division who can them help them define what they can/should be doing. It is also an excellent way to network in the construction arena with other quality professionals. From my own background, I have either been or worked with quality managers for over thirty years, primarily in manufacturing. So I could only start guessing what will be done in construction (albeit similar in many ways from testings, inspections, verifying specifications, etc.). Benchmarking with others in the actual field is best. Other sources of information will be two free magazines that I would suggest that your friend subscribe to are the Quality Digest and the Quality Magazine. Between these two and the ASQ monthly magazien - Quality Progrss, you will also find annual salary surveys that can be quite interesting.

I was a QC manager in a printing plant. It is to oversee the quality of your products and monitor the way your process to improve in whatever ways to reach the zero defect standard. The truth is you can't get zero degree but to go as close as possible with the cooperation of the whole work force. The willingness to learn is the most important factor in working attitude.
