Just what the world needs.... more big headed, self-righteous human resource people, telling highly qualified, super talented people that they won't be interviewed because 5 other applicants had a GPA of 0.1 points higher than them, or 5 other applicants graduated from a higher ranked school than them. And OMG, human resources can't squeeze another interview in because they won't have time to work on their useless employee programs, or figure out ways to cut staff or reduce salaries. So become a human resource person and learn your little formulas for identifying talent (Qualification points = (GPA*.082)+(years of experience*.08)+(University graduated from*.085)+(high school GPA*.07)+(Number of clubs applicant joined*.05)+bla bla bla
I retract on my earlier statement: To tell someone they won't be interviewed is highly unlikely these days. Most applicants won't even get a simple mass rejection email which says "thank you for spending your personal time writing and editing a nice cover letter for me, and submitting all your application material to me, but according to our formulas you are not qualified for this job even though you really are an expert but how do are we supposed to know that? We don't even read your cover letter or have any sense for really finding talented people."
