sarahsmithbaby
how do you go about applying for a retail sales assistant position?
Asked by sarahsmithbaby
I have looked on the internet for positions but it doesn't seem very helpful. I have been told to actually go into shops and ask around, but I am scared i might interrupt someone or they might just be rude and dismissive. Please can someone help thanks!

Some stores advertise job vacancies in their store window. Any high street store should treat you with respect when asking you about vacancies. The best thing to do is go alone (it looks unprofessional if you turn up looking for a job with a bunch of you mates hanging around you) ask at the cash desk if they have any vacancies in the store. If they don't, ask for a job application form to fill in for any future vacancies. You could also leave them a copy of your cv. Don't be put off if you don't hear anything back right away after handing in your application form. They will contact you if any vacancies come up that you woulds be suitable for. Good Luck!

Fight that fear hun - by far the best way IS to go in to shops and ask. And you have every right to interrupt someone - you want a job, and they could have a shiny new sales assistant! When you go in, ask for the manager, don't just ask the nearest assistant 'do you have any jobs going' because they probably won't know, and are likely to just say no. However the manager will know things the assistants don't. If they say no, ask if you can leave a copy of your CV anyway in case something comes up in future. If anyone is rude or dismissive ignore them, stick on a smile and go into the next shop. Part of being a sales assistant is having confidence to just go up to someone and talk to them. Good luck x

I agree that a combo of internet and face to face is the best approach. Another is to let all your friends/family know you're in the market for that position and to keep an eye/ear out for you. They might get you something that leads to the job you want if not that position itself.
