What is the best way to prepare for a career as a police officer?

I am 19 years old and i live in Massachusetts. I have heard that taking criminal justice classes in college is a good way to prepare but I'm open to other options that may be available. Any other serious suggestions on what to do between now and when I apply to become a police officer when I turn 21? I would like to become an officer ASAP :) thank you in advanced to anyone that gives me some serious advice.

A degree in criminal Justice would tell the Police Chief in your town that you are serious about being a Policeman.
