What is it like to work in an office?
Asked by mysteriouswun
I guess it doesn't have to be corporate, but what is it like in general to work in an office? I know that you get your own desk, computer, and phone? But what's the pace typically like? Is it like working in fast food where you're really busy and there's always something to do and you're running around from the moment you get into work until you leave? Or is it like there's nothing to do for a few hours in an 8 hour day?

You don't always get your own computer or desk. If the office is small with several workers, you share a space at the front desk-if it's a doctor's office. The job is very demanding and sometimes difficult. It's fast paced, you need to know how to be very detail oriented, mature, be a multi tasker, social, know how to call insurance companies-if it's a doctor's office- know how to work the fax machine, scanner, Computer, different software programs and multi line telephone system. You sometimes have to work during your lunch break if the office is very busy and there is as lot of work stacked up. Sometimes you don't leave the office until 7pm if you have a lot of work to do. You have to deal with rude people and you must always act very nice.

I've worked in a few offices. some are different then others... one i work for was for a organization for motorcyclists. board meetings consisted of a lot of leather and Harley's growling outside lol, yet the Roberts Rules of Order totally applied to these guys. its was a great atmosphere, i had a lot of work that needed done most of the time, and other times i would have find stuff called busy work just to have something to do...i ran that office alone so i can tell ya, there was A LOT too do.. i loved every second of it and i would really love to go back there... i left only because i needed full time and they couldn't give it to me..that place was very honest and people treated you like people. and if they had a problem they would let me know and I'd do my best to make it all better. something you really wouldn't expect if you only have believe the stereotypes of bikers...it was the greatest job i ever had. Its on Ohio, i don't know if I'm allowed to say its name but, its a biker rights and legislative organization... the best experience of my career life!! I'm saddened that i learned recently that its basically going down in the pits and that just kills me because everyone fought so hard and so strong with their morals and idealism.. truly a sad thing.. but anyway. next one: another job: the people are soo fake and two faced will do anything to get their job easier by pushing all the work onto you. theirs always the gossipers and troublemakers, the kiss-a$$es and the bullies..put it this way, its a office with the mentality of a 7th grade hallway... that's how most offices are.oh be so professorial but yet even the 'big wigs' are just big douches.. the day was never predicable, as you'll never know who's past something on to your desk that you'll have to work on forever and then be bugged by the original people waiting on you but u had to get this 'upper' stuff done before i could finish yours types of things. that place i don't really care about anymore. some landscaping company in ohio... I've worked at others where it is all straight business get in, not a millisecond late, get to your desk. do ur fn' job and then get out a not a millisecond early. down to the second timed powder room breaks and lunches. your a piece of meat in a meat factory, there is always someone behind trying to kill ya off.. They don't care that your grandmother just died or you got in a wreak on lunch break-- it always varies with offices. feel the atmosphere when you go in. talk to people, not probe for questions just let them talk.. you'll feel if its the right kind of place for you to work and be happy working there.. hopes this helps ya 80)
