Is it possible to change career at 30 from Sales Admin to something more interesting like becoming a chef?
Asked by Write- Away
Hi, I live in the UK and have been in Sales Admin (Steel) for around 9 years. I have always enjoyed cooking and the other day wondered what would have happened if I had took that path instead.
Is it too late for this change? Does anyone have any help or advise?
Thanks

It will be hard. There are 10 chefs for every job opening today. You could try to start your new career by offering to cook a complete meal for a family of 4 in their home for £30. You clean up completely when you are done. That might be fun.

If you're keen on a chef job then look for a part time position that lets you test it for a while (like on weekends).
My brother was a hydraulic operator for 12 years before moving into catering service. He found out he was better at managing people & orders than cooking food himself.
It's never too late to try out new challenges. However, retain your current job for the sake of contingency.

Changing careers is really no big deal. Some people start as late as 40 because they got retrenched and is becoming unemployable so they became entrepreneurs. But get proper training and certification. That way, you also can find out if this is truly what you want to do. Cooking for one and cooking for a bunch of people under time stress is a different thing. You may not find it's what you like or you might find areas of cooking that you like eg. dessert chefs are specialists. Have fun and have courage. I took a sabbatical at 30 for 2 years. And went to a completely different job after that and didn't suffer any less. The key is: make sure it's really something you like to do.
