What happens to your family when you enter the police academy?

In Florida we have the Sheriffs Office. Would they require you to attend a police academy? If so, what would a person if they have spouse? I am not married but I was curious to know what happens to those people. How long is the police academy anywy? Would I have to stay there or can I stay at home? Thanks

Most police academies are like a job - you show up at 8 in the morning and go home at 5 at night (with some night training thrown in).
