How can I apply at a dental office or pharmacy?
Asked by orange
I'm studying at a University trying to get into Pharmacy or Dental Hygiene so this summer. I'm looking for a job this summer where I can obtain work experience that is relevant for either of those future careers.

1. Make two sets of your resume. One set should say Job Objective: Pharmacy Assistant. The other should say Job Objective: Dental Office Assistant. (I assume you don't have the licensing yet to be a dental assistant, but you can still work in the office.) 2. Print out a list of pharmacies in your area by selecting your city and state via the link on the upper right of this web page (http://yp.yahoo.com/ypBrowse.py?ycat=7737238&zip=0&uzip=0&msa=0&slt=0&sln=0&cs=0), then selecting Pharmacies. Print a list of dentists by selecting Dentistry on the above web page. 3. Map out a route to deliver your resumes to each of these places, then go in person. 4. At each pharmacy, ask to speak with the pharmacist. At each dentist's office, ask to speak with the office manager. Ask if they plan to be hiring for this summer, and even if they say no, ask if you can leave your resume with them and fill out an application for them to have on file. Take a business card from each office you go to. If they said they plan to hire for the summer, then ask when they will be doing this, who you can contact to find out whether they've started asking people to interview and when they've made their hiring decision. Write this info on the back of the business card. 5. Keep the business cards in two piles. One pile is the places that said they'll have jobs this summer; the other is for places that said no. A week or two later, or when the place said they'd be working on interviewing people, call back and ask if that is happening yet. Remind them that they have your resume and application. Be friendly; you want them to like you so they will pick you to bring in and you for the job. Call back every couple of weeks. 6. A few weeks later, call the places that said they would not be hiring, just to remind them that you're interested and to see if there is any change in plans. Call these places back about once a month. Also check the want ads in your local newspaper for these jobs. Don't forget to apply to the local hospitals for their pharmacies and to the local college pharmacy and dental schools. Sometimes you can apply to these places online, but it's always better to approach them face to face.

For a pharmacy, just walk up to the counter and ask if they are hiring (it would help if you tell them your line of study so they know that you are qualified/relevant as an employee). I don't know as many people who have gotten jobs as dental assistants, but they all knew somebody in an office. If you have friends at school who have connections, use them!

most places require you to apply online for a job these days. you should look at the job board at your university and even ask your adviser or a professor for help. job search online or at your local unemployment office.
