How do I get a nursing degree after getting a bachelor's in psychology?
Asked by Julia
I am in my Junior year of college working towards a psychology degree, but I have been thinking about nursing. I do not want to switch my major this late or transfer schools. Any suggestions about what would happen after I graduate if I still want to be a RN? Are there programs appropriate for me without having to get another bachelors?

Look into programs called "accelerated BSN" or "post-baccalaureate BSN" programs. Depending on what you took for your psych degree and when you completed those courses, you may or may not need to fulfill some nursing pre-reqs. Once you start the nursing core, if you are able to attend full-time you could be done in as little as 18 months. Going any other route (into an ADN program, specifically) would be foolish since you already hold a baccalaureate which gives you the leg up in these kinds of BSN programs. Good luck!

you will probably need to finish all the prerequisites required for the program, such as med surg, clinical, biology102..just to name a few. Since you already have some of them met, some of your credits will be counted toward certain classes. You still have to be accepted into the nursing program and maintain a 3.5gpa, You may have to end up getting two degrees, reason for this is that a lot of the prerequisites aren't included in the curriculum for a psychology degree....

Look for Accelerate BSN Degree Programs. These programs will transfer in all of your previously completed BA or BS credentials and offer you courses in nursing that will lead to a BSN and make you eligible to sit for licensure as a nurse. You may have to complete some prerequisites in the natural sciences prior to starting (microbiology, chemistry, biology) but the time to do these and complete the program is much shorter than any other nursing program.
