How hard is it to be a server at a restaurant?
Asked by Indieman
I'm currently looking for a job and found that a new restaurant is looking for servers. I'vre worked at a restaurant before but as a busser and that was over 2 years ago. So I have an understanding of how it works but unsure if I can really pull it off. Can anyone describe how it is, the challenges and benefits?

being a server isn't hard but it depends on the area you live in. I served for 3 years and you have to be able to tolerate people treating you like crap for everything. If the kitchen is slow its your fault, if the food is cooked wrong its your fault and your pay will suffer because of it. It can be a profitable job though if you are in a higher class restaurant and you will have less jerks. If you can tolerate human stupidity with a smile on your face then you will do fine. As for me I couldn't do it so after three years of being polite to the rude arrogant people who think they know everything about your restaurant and the way it works I was done. Be prepared though as a server your base pay will probably only be about $3 an hour so your tips will be very important to you.
