Most carpenters work with wood... there are levels of carpentery. Contact your local "carpenters union" and talk to them about taking an entry test that will measure whether or not you're ready to begin a carpentry career. If you're not then they will point you in the right direction for training, if you are then they will help you find a job as an apprentice. Apprentice and do the grunt work for the lowest pay for a few years working under a regular carpenter, then you'll move up to a regular carpenter and train under a "master carpenter", then finally you'll be able to take the reigns... but it takes years of hard work and you must provide QUALITY work, remember, people can buy pre-made cabinets from home depot, you're work will have to hold up past those cheap slap together jobs.

You will need to undergo an apprenticeship which is 3 years. The training is done at TAFE and the on site experience is through a job.
