how long does it take to get the degree required for EMT certificate?
Asked by Lizzze
My fiance just got out of the military and now he wants to be an EMT, but i don't know how long that will be and he's unsure himself. We kind of need an idea so that we can start planning everything around this so any info will help us greatly!

EMT basic is not a degree, just a 1 semester program at the community college then an exam. This is an entry level position. The next step is a paramedic which is an approximately 1 year training program (again no degree really needed, although some have an AA). Good luck!

You take classes that last around 6 weeks and you take your test.
the test can be difficult. if you fail you have to wait 2 weeks to retake it.

It is a fairly short class, about 2 months, and it is not a degree. The previous poster said the next step is paramedic, BUT you can also become a EMT intermediate. I am in that class now. It is about 4 months long, than ALOT of clinacal work. For example I have to log 75 hours on a advanced life support ambulance, and most departments will only let you do it in 12 hour shifts. Also I have to log at least 58 hours in the hospital, in the ER, operating room, ICU, pediatrics, and OB. I would say to become a paramedic you should triple that stuff to be safe on long long it will take.

It's not a degree program. Your fiance can take the EMT basic courses at a community college (2 semesters). Once he finishes and passes the required courses and internships, he can take the NREMT test (computer administered test). Depending what state he is located in, he may have to take another test after the NREMT. I know for sure in CA you have to take an additional test after the NREMT test.
