Maybe you need to research this job title more in depth. Because in actuality medical billing is billing insurance companies and patients. You are in charge of collecting payments, posting to patient/client accounts, and accounts payable/receivable (all pretty much the same thing). So you will be dealing with money. Medical Providers do not tolerate inexperience when it comes down to their money. They usually look for experience rather than certifications. You can have the certificate but not know what you are doing. I know many medical billers who are proficient and have not a lick of certifications. I have also seen medical billers with certificates and not know what in the world they were doing. So my advice? Get experience! Start off as a Receptionist in a Physician's office and move your way up to billing. That's how most medical billers get experience....once you become proficient, add to the potatoes and get the certification (that's the gravy). Then you actually build accounts and work from home if you would like.
