Depending on your previous Job experience you can try applying for a job at a security agency for a corporate company. That way you can eliminate taking time to get a criminal justice degree and you will get a pretty hands on experience with law enforcement just in a corporate setting. You will take part in conducting investigations and depending on your physical ability you may be able to make arrests and then handover your suspect to a local police department to be further processed. You will also be working with a lot of interesting digital security equipment and probably get a good laugh at how dumb people can really be.

if you want something along the lines of doing forensic things, get a forensic science degree with a criminal justice/criminology minor.
however, be aware that the jobs and things that you see on CSI are very rare, and are inaccurate when portrayed by the media.
A good thing too do is get either a double major in Criminal Justice, and something else that will help you in the specific part of what you want to do.

Age doesn't really matter, but if you want to be an investigator, then a degree in criminal justice CAN help, and your focus can be on whichever area interests you more. :)
