Interviewers are usually interested in verifying that the candidate is genuinely interested in the field. You can say, what made you interested in this career and why you are so passionate about it. You back up your answer by citing evidence of interest such as going back to school getting a related degree, doing an internship in this field, etc.
There is no right or wrong answer for this trick question. You have already fallen for the trick; thus playing defense having to "justify", rather than "rightfully claim" your spot in this field. Do you see my subtle point? I am talking about your level of confidence that this is right for you. If you are totally sure of what you want you will not have this doubt. Suppose you didn't apply the "Mechanical Engineer" label to yourself, and are starting in this field as a fresh graduate, how would you answer this question?
Having said that, it is better to choose a career based on genuine interest than say be lured by perceived glamor.
