How long does it take for Human Resources to review an applicant's references?
Asked by Carole G
I applied for a position at a local hospital to be a phlebotomist a few weeks ago. I've gone through two interviews and the interviewers told me that I would know by last week. Since I didn't get a call back, I called the person that interviewed me and she said it was up to Human Resources to do some reference checking. How long will it take for them to call my references?

It really depends on how accessible your references are. If they are leaving messages and your references aren't returning the call, that's a problem. Call your references and ask if they have received calls. Also let them know that the decision is being made based on references. It may also mean that the person you are talking to is "copping" out. They are not telling you that you didn't get the job, for whatever reason. So if you find out that your references have been called, it's then time to reach out to the person who makes a decision about hiring you and ask, politely, if there is anything else that they need from you, and if they know when a decision will be made.
