In Alberta, Canada, can an employer force you to work late if you have no transportation?
Asked by anon
My son is 18 and doesn't drive yet (still working on it). His employer wants him to work until 12:30 am. There is no public transportation any more at that hour, and I'm not going to be able to pick him up that late if I have to work the next day. Can he be forced to work that late when there's no transportation available? Yes, he is looking for another job.

Best Answer:
transportation to and from work is not the employers responsibility. your son can refuse to work and the employer can terminate his employment if he does....

No he cannot. If he feels that at 12:30 am when there is no way for him to get home and he feels like his safety is being put a risk then he can say no to work that late. If his boss wants him to work until that hour then HE must pay a taxi for your son to go home or he must drive him.
