Do i have to work over time?
Asked by Kylejjw
I work as a dietary Aide at a nursing home in Mississauga Ontario, Canada. I only work there part time. Do i have to work over time? Or can i just go when my time is up. I only work part time, 4 hours a day. But my boss is giving me more and more things to do which take so damn long. Not like when i first started. So now im usualy runing late, finishing 15-20 min later. Do i have to stay?

it depends on you...if you want just do it.....if you are tired just leave it

shouldnt that be something you ask your employer? If you work only part time, I dont think there is a way for you to work OT anyway.. unless they caclulate OT on a daily basis rather than weekly, and you work more than 8 hrs in a day

Ask your supervisor. Normally, you just work the hours you are scheduled, but if someone who is supposed to replace you calls in sick, they might want you to stay late. It all depends on what your employer's policies are.

According to http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/hours/info_hours.html the labor laws in Ontario specify that you do not have to work more than 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week if you choose not too. This is of course assuming you haven't signed an agreement specifying a requirement to work more hours.

You should be grateful for the extra work. As long as you are getting paid for it I don't think you should complain. If you have an after work obligation you should let your boss know at the beginning of your shift that you will be leaving at a certain time.
