What does a sales & marketing manager do?

Hi, I'm writing a novel in which I want the hero to be a sales and marketing manager in the automotive industry. So if one of you out there know a thing or two about this field, I'd love to know more. I tried google and wikipedia, but still, I need something from someone who has experienced it. Thank you ^_^

In short the sales and marketing manager is the lifeblood of many businesses.
Responsible for generating sales they have to be continually on their toes, thinking up and implementing creative ways of selling their products, either through targeted advertising with a call to action, press releases, fund raisers, promotions and offers, events and such like.
They will also have responsibility for making sure that their efforts are shown to generate increased sales by analysing results such as trading patterns based on what was spent on marketing versus what additional revenue was achieved.
