A welder who needs help negotiating his salary?
Asked by shortfusewhite
hello all I have just recently graduated from a two year welding course and am ready to start my career as a welder. I have found my first job the starting pay is 10$ an hour (remeber I have no experience in the field other than what I did in school) But I am buying my own welding machine in a few weeks how do I negotiate extra pay for using my own machine, please give details on how to go about this without my sounding ungratefull and greedy. Also how much per hour should I charge for using my own machine?

Have you done any research on what is a common starting pay for welders? If not, you should do it. There are great websites out there with such information. Also, I suppose you have contacts from school who mayknow what you could charge for using you own machine. Having done some research, I'd approach the employer saying something like this: "Look, I have bought my own welding machine and will now use it in my work. As you know, it is common practice that welders with their own machines get higher salary than welders without such machines. I have done some research and found out that $XX is a reasonable addition to the salary. What do you say about that?" Good luck! Regards, David Hill
