If you get hired by a department or Federal agency, they will pay you while going through the academy. I have been through both a Police Academy (in Mississippi) and the Border Patrol Academy and got paid for both while attending. Also what Academy is 8 months? most are less than 3 months, the Border Patrol is the longest Federal one and that is because you have to learn spanish, and it was just slightly over 5 months. Edit: just looked and the CHP has the longest state one 6 (months) and if I recall the last month or so is spend in a Car on the streets.
