What is an office manager really?
Asked by TB
I am the office manager at my work. I have a lot on my plate! I do absolutely everything, from setting schedules to answering phones, to payroll billing, ordering simply EVERYTHING. I am the only one who works in the office of a growing company and I am becoming extremely overwhelmed. My assumptions were always that an office manager handled a lot but was also other people performing other jobs. So my questions is, am I being taken advantage of or is it simply that stressful for the office manager?? Keep in mind here I only make 13 an hour.

If you work in California - you are getting taken advantage of - Office Managers here make in the low $40's to start. You need to be assigned the higher level projects and have a junior Administrative Assistant as support. Talk with the leadership, because you are a part of management and should be treated as such.

Get people to do their jobs, or find others who will.

Remember., you don't get what you want or deserve, you get what you negotiate!!! It sounds like your company is growing and the higher ups are just too involved with other things to pay much attention to you. If the work is getting done; why should they have to? It may be time to negotiate for some more money, and if you are that busy it might be time to ask for a part time assistant, perhaps a retired person or a student who has experience in office protocol who only wants to work a few hours a week. .
