What is project management, and is there such a profession as project manager?

Do yoy just complete a course to be a project manager or do you also have to have expertise in some other field to get a job as a project manager?

Project management is more than one course and you have to be certified as a project manager (PMP certification) to get a job as a PM.

Both. My company had many project managers. Their duties; manage all aspects of computer installations. The training on the software, the conversion of the data, the delivery of all components, ensuring the customer is happy and we get paid on time. You produce schedules for the client and the company, you coordinate resources, you arrange meetings and resolve problems. They had to understand our business and how to manage a project. All had various levels of certification from various training programs. All had college degrees. Now, i'm sure every project manager out there does not need a college degree, we just demanded it.

Work can be split into generally recurring (most business functions like accounting, sales, marketing) and non-recurring. The latter usually consists of activities that change the way the company operates (new computer system, new product, changed manufacturing facility). The person responsible for each of these non-recurring activities, or projects, is the project manager.
The project manager is responsible for organising the people and work, communicating progress, manging the delivery of whatever the project is delivering, managing changes, looking after purchase of equipment, identifying risks and taking action to avoid them, etc. If you check out our site, there are a number of basic white papers on the subject.
