In order to become an apartment complex manager, do you have to have prior management experience?
Asked by Eternal Elevation
I currently do not have prior management experience because currently I work as a wedding cake designer and decorator, but i do have a business/office degree.
Do I have what it takes to be an apartment manager?
If not, what experiences qualifies you to become that?

Probably w/o the experience, you will be overlooked for someone with the exp. Most companies have on sight mgrs that live in one of the units. And being a mgr equals to being a policewoman, babysitter,part time maintenace person, etc. Not exactly a "fun" job :}

It depends entirely on what the hiring person wants. But, I'm sure it would help tremendously. And any type of management position probably counts as experience.

If you have a business/office degree, I hope that means that you are familiar with a computer. You will need that. Also, sales experience, or anything to do with public relations is good. You will probably need to start as a leasing agent & then work up. Sometimes when you apply for a leasing position, the employer will look the fact that you have a degree & step in & offer you something higher up. That is what happened to me. You need to be good with people, even the difficult ones & to multi-task. You will need the computer to to credit reports. You should have good math skills so you can do the paperwork that is needed to get the lease work together. This will involve doing all of the calculations of security deposit, credit check charge, etc. so you can come up with the amt. that the future resident needs to move in.
You will be trained because each company has there own procedures. What you really need is a open, good personality with alot of energy (which you will need) & show that you are Intelligent & can learn quickly (you have a degree).
