Is bank teller better than a server job?
Asked by andre
I just graduated with a degree in liberal arts and I have an offer to work as a bank teller. The thing is, I wouldn't make any more money than I am already making as a server. Should I take the teller job?

Being a bank teller is all mental-work, whereas being a server is a lot more physical- you would probably come home less tired as a teller, and you'd have your evenings free. There's also more room for career progression- I would go with the bank job, if I were you.

I was a bank teller for two years. It wasn't a bad job. It's the same thing every day, same routine, same customers, etc. I would recommend you take it, however. It could open up to higher paying jobs in the future (banker perhaps). But, then again, so could your server job (if you want to be a restaurant manager one day). Tough call, but the bank teller is a little more prestige. I recommend you make a list of pros and cons on a sheet of paper for each job and go from there! Good Luck

How about for now you take the bank teller job and serve tables on Friday- Saturday nights? That way you can test the waters with the bank teller but you are keeping your feet in hospitality with some extra bucks a week you can put away cash for maybe even starting your own business one day... a bank... or a restaurant..
Coming from a server that has been in the industry now for nearly 10 years at the age of 25 i gotta tell you that i am itching to get out.. i think it's good to have a change here and there to stimulate the brain.. your server job is better hours though i am guessing.. anyway your a smart cookie. you will feel whats best for you.

What you need to consider is which has more potential for growth. Do you see yourself moving from server to management? Even with more schooling? If you take the job as a bank teller, there is potential for job growth. You can move into management, especially if you go to evening school and earn an MBA. (MBAs love liberal arts graduates)
Just my opinion though, and you need to make up your own mind. Are you happier at one? That should come into play as well. How stable is the industry?
