How does taking drama classes help managers?
Asked by Chaco-Yekke Downyonder
I vaguely remember someone mentioning to me that they were taking drama classes, and that it had something to do with refining their performance as managers.
What exactly was that person hinting at, what do you think?

Drama class will help a person learn how to communicate more effectively, which is a vital management skill.

I would imagine a drama class would sharpen skills in extemporaneous problem solving, human interaction and decision-making under stress. Also it would be a lesson on improvisation and 'thinking outside the box', aka thinking creatively to find unconventional ways to solve conventional problems.
And learning to overcome the fear of public speaking!

I think that it is about improving the whole bunch of skills you need when you have to talk about important things in front of large audiences. Most of them are also needed for stage acting. For example, keeping a straight face while talking absolute bullshit...;-)
Also, drama lessons make you discover quite a lot about yourself, when they are good. That's never wrong.
And when you have a lot of fun doing the lessons, it is easier to take the strain of a management job. The thingy with the life-work-balance, that makes you ill when it's upset...
