Looking for a blue collar skilled trade - training & certifications?
Asked by ashortkid
I'm a young adult, about two years removed from college with my business degree. I've realized that office jobs just aren't my cup of tea, and I feel like I'd be much happier in a blue collar type job. I've always enjoyed working with my hands - whether it be taking on handy man jobs around the house, landscaping, or in particular working on cars.
My question is this: I'm located in central MD, and I'm looking for a relatively cheap way to receive some sort of certification in a skilled trade at nights while I continue working my current job. I don't want to be just a general laborer - I want to have some sort of verifiable skill that will remain in demand.
What can I get trained for in that 6 month timeframe, and more importantly where can I get that training? My thoughts initially are electrician, welder, carpenter or plumber, but I'm open to others.

I live in Maryland as well and am sure I have the right answer=
Lincoln Technical Institute
- www.lincolnedu.com - (410) 290-7100
But here is a full site of all trade jobs=
www.trade-schools.net/locations/maryland-schools-directory.asp
Here is one for Air Conditioning/Heating-
www.trade-schools.net/directory/hvac-maryland.asp
Just be careful with some places because they are scams.
Also in Baltimore is the Workplace and Technology Center where they offer working with cars and other things-
Workforce And Technology Center
www.dors.state.md.us
2301 Argonne Drive
Baltimore, MD 21218
(410) 554-9324
Here are some welding schools-
Delta Welding & Engineering
- deltaschooloftrades.com
5416 Pulaski Hwy, Baltimore, MD - (410) 485-3449
Earlbeck Gases & Technologies
- www.earlbeck
www.technical-schools-guide.com/maryland-weldingmachinetrades-schools.html
These places are about 6-12 months training with a certificate or Associate's Degree and possible job placement. Most places specialize in small classes and individual attention. I went to the Workforce Center in Baltimore for accounting.
Hope this helps!
