Career Questions and Answers
Hotels offer great jobs as hotel sales managers. Why are so few people aware of hotel sales careers?
Asked by Bob
I am amazed that people always think about housekeepers and chefs and waiters when they think of hotels. Hotels offer great jobs in hotel sales and catering. We pay well and you advance quickly. I'd like to know why there is so little awareness of hotel sales and catering jobs and their opportunities.

I don't know, I guess it's because they don't really relate to hotels, like they aren't the first people you think about when someone says hotel. I didn't even know that there were accounting, catering, and sales departments existed until I had a co-op placement at a hotel in the marketing and accounting departments.
And yes, they really do offer great jobs and pay really well.

The Wall Street Journal says that hotels are getting 50 applications for every open position today. So people are aware of hotels and hotel careers.
Hotel careers tend to be hectic. The work never ends. Guests are arriving and needing service 24 hours a day. The problems with plumbing or door locks or missing luggage are never-ending. It takes a special person to be able to smile non-stop.
But it is a great career for many.
