Do event or meeting planners have assistants? If so, what types of duties does the assistant do?

If you work at a major hotel chain, you get an assistant. The planners job is to keep the ballrooms full with conventions and weddings and "events". The planner is out meeting people half of the day. The assistant remains in the office to answer questions on the phone. Also to make sure someone is available if guests walk in for information. And to do the daily supervision .... make sure the band is setting up at 4pm when they are supposed to. But you walk a "fine line". If you start to get too good at answering questions, the planner will wonder if you are interested in replacing her.
