Career Questions and Answers

Doug C
Can they force you to take a "promotion" at work?
Asked by Doug C
Most jobs you might be happy to get a promotion... but not me. I am a security guard. They want me to be an armed security guard. I am uncomfortable with this. They hire guards at $10.50 per hour. After 6 months, you get $10.75, 1 year $11.25, 2 years $12.00. That's my pay. The boss says it is hard for him to place guards at top of scale. On the other hand, armed guards start at $11.50, $12.00 after 6 months, 1 year $12.50, 2 years $13.00 and are easy to place. The boss will loan money for a pistol. He wants it to be a 38 special, with a 2.875"" to 4" barrel. He suggested the Philippine made ARMSCOR M200 has a 4" barrel is $199.99, the ARMSCOR M206 has a 2.875" barrel is $209.99. The Argentine made Comanche II is $219.99 in either 3" or 4" barrel versions. I found out these are the cheapest revolvers you could buy. I don't like that. I would be paid $10.50 per hour for training. It would be 12 four hour days. The course is about $600. $600 I don't have. $600 they will pay only if don't get paid during training and I lose a lot of pay. Is there anything I can do about this?

Not really. You can talk to the boss and tell him you don't want to do it, but sounds like you already have. If you don't get the added qualifications, he doesn't have to keep you employed.
